Child Leukemia Symptoms in Children

Most of the signs and symptoms of leukemia result from a lack of normal blood cells. This happens because the cancer cells crowd out the normal cells that make blood in the bone marrow. The leukemia cells may also spread to other parts of the body, which can also cause symptoms, too. Keep in mind that many of the symptoms here most often are caused by other problems — not leukemia.

Child Leukemia Symptoms and Treatment

The most common types of leukemia that are found in children are acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and acute myelogenous leukemia (AML). Although these types of leukemia share common child leukemia symptoms, they also have slightly different symptoms. Children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) frequently have low amounts of healthy red blood cells and platelets. As a result, there are not enough red blood cells to carry oxygen through the body (anemia). In childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the abnormal cells may collect in the brain or spinal cord, also called the central nervous system (CNS). This may result in headaches with or without vomiting. Leukemia cells also can collect in the testicles and cause swelling. However, most children with leukemia do not have these symptoms.

Common childhood acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) symptoms may include:
* Fever with or without an infection
* Shortness of breath
* Petechiae (flat, pinpoint spots under the skin caused by bleeding)
* Pain in the bones or joints
* Pain or feeling of fullness below the ribs
* Painless blue-green lumps called chloromas that appear around the eyes
* Painless blue or purple lumps in the neck, underarm, stomach, groin, or other parts of the body.
The symptoms listed in above may be caused by leukemia or by other conditions. Typically most of these symptoms do not occur during the early stages of leukemia and children may experience different symptoms. Therefore, it is recommended to talk to a doctor if there’s any possibility of having these child leukemia symptoms.
