Today is his birthday, and the exact date is 9 May 1874. On the 1922, he discovered Tutankhamun’s tomb which has inspired almost a century of Hollywood movies, books and media attention.

Born in London, England, on May 9, 1874, Howard Carter was coming from a lower middle class family. Maspero then appointed Carter to the newly established position of Inspector-General of Monuments of Upper Egypt. Carter began to take an active interest in the vast cemeteries on the West Bank of Thebes, known as the Theban necropolis which lead him close to the discovery of the Tutankhamun’s tomb.

Howard Carter’s discovery brought a complete picture of the colorful civilization of the Eighteenth Dynasty in Egypt; it revealed a Golden Age of arts and crafts equal to any other period of ancient times. Before this event, little had been previously known.
